The Renaissance Sectors are considerably older than their name might suggest. Early Imperial records classified much of this territory as part of the degraded outer wake: regions where Vandyrian civilization had become sufficiently dispersed that reliable administration, communication, and political continuity could no longer be assumed. The designation of these territories as “lost,” however, should not be interpreted literally. They had not vanished, nor had Vandyrian civilization simply ceased to exist within them. Rather, they had fallen below the degree of coherence by which the Empire traditionally recognized its own functioning territorial structure.

Their modern recovery is consequently described within the Core Worlds as a process of re-synchronization rather than conquest. From the Imperial perspective, the distinction is important. The Empire does not regard these regions as foreign territories newly acquired from beyond its historical frontier, but as portions of the greater Vandyrian civilizational wake returning to recognizable alignment after an extraordinarily prolonged interruption. The Renaissance Covenant has become particularly important in this regard, demonstrating that territories separated from conventional Imperial administration for immense spans of time may nevertheless retain enough underlying continuity to become recoverable.

The success of that process has had consequences well beyond the Renaissance Sectors themselves. It has forced Imperial scholarship to reconsider how long a region may remain beyond effective administration before its connection to the greater Vandyrian system can meaningfully be considered extinct. In practical terms, the answer increasingly appears to be: considerably longer than previously assumed.
